Bài tập Tiếng Anh tích hợp Lớp 5 - Grade 5: English Review 8 - Pack 3

When writing dialogue (people speaking), we most often use the word said to show that a character has spoken.

This helps the reader to see who is speaking, but it can also become boring to read and it does not give us extra information about how they said something.

There are many synonyms for said that not only let the reader know who is speaking, but also give us more information. They can give us an idea of how loudly or softly something was said as well as what kind of feeling it was said with.

___________________________________________________________________...tcher shop. Margaret left at fourteen and worked in a clothes factory.
“I wasn’t really interested at the time, I just wanted to have fun on the ice’, said Margaret. ‘Ken
came up behind me and knocked me down. He told me years later that he did it because he wanted
to pick me up’.
But three years later, when he was eighteen, he joined the army and had to move to Burma
where many of his friends were killed. In 1988, Ken
published a book about his experiences there. He described
feeling relieved and happy when he finally was allowed to
go home. ‘Then, I knew I was going to have a life after all’.
Back home in Northampton, Ken renewed his
friendship with Margaret. The couple had a six-year
engagement before buying a house and getting married in
1937. Then they had two children, John and Brenda. Ken
became the shop manager at the butchers and Margaret
stayed home while the children grew up. The couple now
have eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren -
the latest one is only three years old. Two years ago, they
had to leave their own home because of Ken’s poor health.
They now live together in a retirement home in Leicester.
“We have lots of lovely memories but the birth of our two children is the most special’, said
Margaret. ‘And the best decade for me was when Ken retired in the ‘70’s. His retirement meant
that we could spend more time together. I love Ken so much. I don’t know what I would do
without him.’
Their son, John, 73, a retired professor of chemistry
who lives in Austria, has a lot of nice things to say about
his parents. ‘They are completely devoted to each other’,
he said. “And my sister and I could not ask for better
parents”.
“My mother gave up her life for her family and home.
Our parents gave us opportunities which they never had
themselves and encouraged us to do our very best in life.”
